NJAS is keeping CARES fish

Founded in 2004, the CARES (Conservation, Awareness, Recognition and Responsibility, Encouragement and Education, and Support and Sharing) Preservation Program is based on the critical and timely significance of conservation, educating the public and bringing awareness as hobbyists to the issues involved, public recognition of members, our responsibilities as fishkeepers, member encouragement, sharing of fish and data, and support for those who take part in playing a vital role in ensuring a positive future for species at risk. The purpose of the CARES Preservation Program is to encourage hobbyists worldwide to devote tank space to one or more species at risk and distribute offspring to fellow qualified hobbyists, while forming an information network where possible between aquarists, scientists, and conservationists.

CARES is designed to be implemented through local aquarium societies and national as well as international organizations. This way, participants will have the greatest opportunity to distribute and locate fish, and to share their experiences with like-minded hobbyists.

CARES has four major goals:

  1. To bring awareness to the critical situation of fish in nature, while educating the public and stressing the importance of our roles as responsible aquarists;
  2. To recognize, encourage, and offer support to hobbyists who maintain species at risk;
  3. To share fish as well as data and experiences through notes and manuscripts so that others may learn to maintain those identical and similar species; and
  4. To preserve species at risk for future generations.

The NJAS CARES Points Program

CARES points aren't a separate program — they're a bonus layered onto NJAS's existing Breeders Award Program (BAP). If you're already submitting fry through BAP, keeping a CARES species just earns extra points and seals on top of what you'd earn anyway.

  1. Find a species. Browse the CARES Priority List — you may already be keeping one.
  2. Register it with CARES. Fill out the official CARES Species Identification form.
  3. Register it with NJAS. Submit the species through NJAS BAP registration, marked as a CARES species.
  4. Submit a photo. A clear photo of your fish in your own aquarium — no photos found online — confirms identification and adds the entry to the registry.

25CARES Participant
100CARES Supporter
250CARES Enthusiast
400CARES Authority
600CARES Master
1000CARES Grand Master

Tier is tracked from CARES bonus points only, separate from general BAP standing. A certificate carrying all four seals — gold, green, blue, and red — plus an unbroken row of longevity seals marks the highest level of CARES achievement for a species.

Species Maintenance Award

Beyond the points ladder, NJAS recognizes members who go deep on a single species with a standalone award, presented at a club meeting. To qualify:

  • Maintain the species for a minimum of 2 years
  • Distribute 6+ fry at 5 separate NJAS auctions or swap meets
  • Write an article covering the husbandry, breeding, and overall experience over that 2-year span
  • Provide at least 20 photos documenting the fish at different life stages

CARES Member of the Year

Each year, NJAS recognizes one member who has gone above and beyond for the CARES program — through outstanding species preservation, generously sharing knowledge, and helping fellow members with their own CARES efforts. This member's name is also submitted to the national CARES program for recognition.

Points are tracked in a coordinator-maintained Google Sheet, not auto-pulled from AquaristSpecies.net — registrations, BAP-submitted fry, published articles, and longevity all get logged there directly.
